FAQ

We know starting counseling can feel like a big step.
Here are some common questions to help you know what to expect.

Getting Started

Q: Who do you work with?

A: Yolanda provides counseling for individual adults, teens, couples, and families who are seeking support with anxiety, depression, trauma, life changes, relationship challenges, and more.

Q: How do I schedule my first appointment?

A: You can schedule a session by calling (571) 888-5140 or emailing patientservices@abbycounseling.com. If you prefer, you can also use the “Book a Session” buttons on the website, and we’ll follow up with you to confirm your appointment time.

Q: What can I expect in the first session?

A: The first session is a chance to get to know each other. Yolanda will ask about what brought you to counseling, your history, and your goals. You’re welcome to share at your own pace. Together, you’ll decide on a plan for moving forward.

Sessions & Scheduling

Q: How long is a counseling session?

A: Most sessions are about 50-55 minutes.

Q: How often will we meet?

A: Many clients start with weekly sessions, then adjust to every other week or less often as they begin to feel more supported and stable. The frequency is flexible and based on your needs and goals.

Q: Do you offer telehealth (online) sessions?

A: Yes. Yolanda offers HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions for clients located anywhere in Virginia. Online sessions are a great option if you need flexibility, privacy at home, or reduced travel time.

Insurance, Fees & Payment

Q: Do you accept my insurance?

A: Abigail Counseling is in network with several insurance plans, including Cigna Healthcare, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, TriCare (East), Aetna, Anthem, and the VA Community Care Network. If your plan is listed on the Fees & Insurance page, services may be covered fully or partially. Please contact your insurance carrier to confirm your mental health benefits.

Q: What if I don’t want to use insurance?

A: You’re welcome to pay privately using the self-pay rates listed on the Fees & Insurance page. Many clients prefer this for increased privacy and control over their care.

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?

A: We accept credit/debit cards and HSA/FSA cards. If you have questions about payment options, please reach out and we’ll be happy to help.

Cancellations & Policies

Q: What is your cancellation policy?

A: We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice may be billed at the full session rate, as noted on the Fees & Insurance page.

Q: What if I’m running late?

A: We understand that life happens. If you’re running late, please call, text, or email to let us know. We’ll do our best to use the remaining time effectively, but sessions still end at the scheduled time.

Confidentiality & Safety

Q: Is what I share in counseling confidential?

A: Yes. Your privacy is very important. Information shared in counseling is kept confidential, with a few exceptions required by law—such as concerns about serious risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse, or certain court orders. Your counselor can explain this in more detail during your first session.

Q: What if I’m in crisis or having an emergency?

A: If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a crisis, please do not wait for an appointment. Call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), dial 911, or go to the nearest emergency room. You can also find additional crisis resources on our Resources page.
